Background:
1) The M2 mortar is a 60mm smoothbore, muzzle-loading weapon with a high-angle-of-fire, utilized by U.S. forces for light infantry support during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
2) The U.S. M2 60 mm mortar, licensed from the French Brandt company, was designed to complement the 81 mm M1 mortar by providing a lighter option for company-level fire support.
3) The M2 mortar was designed to fill the gap between the 81 mm mortar and the hand grenade. Typically used by the weapons platoon of a U.S. infantry company, the M2 follows the standard mortar design of its time. It features a smoothbore metal tube mounted on a rectangular baseplate, supported by a simple bipod equipped with elevation and traverse mechanisms. The firing pin is fixed in the base cap of the tube, allowing the bomb to fire automatically upon dropping down the barrel. Although classified as a light mortar, the M2 offered a significant range compared to the 50 mm and 60 mm mortars used by most other nations. Its fixed-firing pin design enabled trained crews to achieve a high rate of fire.
